Italian fashion house Gucci said on Twitter that it will now accept ApeCoin, the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s proprietary cryptocurrency, for purchases at select US stores. The luxurious brand also stated that the move would be another step for Gucci in the Web3 world.

Gucci has joined with bitcoin fee service provider BitPay to handle ApeCoin transactions. ApeCoin is a restricted, claimable cryptocurrency first intended for holders of Bored Ape and Mutant Ape. However, this is not the first time that Gucci has experimented in the Web3 realm. In 2021, at Christie’s Proof of Sovereignty sale, an NFT film featuring the Aria fashion collection was purchased for $25,000 with a price tag of $25,000.
Later in January 2022, Gucci and numerous other fashion titans launched a bunch of 10,000 NFTs that were generated by a computer program. Then, in March, Gucci released its very own 10KTF: Gucci Grail Mint Move collection, which allowed holders to build personalized NFT profile images or PFP outfits based on 11 of the most popular NFT projects at the time.
Other luxury brands that have used cryptocurrency payments include Balenciaga, Tag Heuer, Nike, Hipster’s Paradise, Aeropostale, H&M, Calvin Klein, American Eagle, Philipp Plein, and Etsy.
